From Flames to Feelings: My Journey to Mental Wellness Advocacy
I’ve always been the type of person who thrives under pressure. As a first responder firefighter and EMT, I’ve faced the flames, the chaos, and the heart-wrenching moments that come with saving lives. Each call, each rescue, made me feel alive. But it also took a toll. I began to realize that while I was trained to handle physical emergencies, the emotional aftermath was a different beast altogether.
One night, after a particularly grueling shift, I sat in my truck, the hum of the engine the only sound accompanying my thoughts. We had just pulled a family from a serious car accident, and while we managed to save them, the look in their eyes haunted me. It wasn’t just fear I saw; it was a profound sense of loss and trauma. As I drove home, I couldn’t shake the feeling that while I was helping to mend the physical wounds, there was a whole world of mental and emotional scars that needed tending too.
That’s when the seed was planted. I started to wonder: what if I could do more? What if I could help people not just in their dire moments but also in their everyday struggles with mental health? I decided to dive into the world of psychology. I enrolled in classes, spending countless nights studying theories and practices, unraveling the complex tapestry of the human mind.
After years of hard work and determination, I finally opened my practice. It felt surreal to transition from battling flames to sitting across from clients, listening to their stories. I discovered that the skills I had honed as a first responder—empathy, quick thinking, and the ability to remain calm under pressure—were just as valuable in therapy. I was able to create a safe space for my clients, many of whom were first responders themselves, grappling with the weight of their experiences.
But as rewarding as it was, I soon realized my practice was just a drop in the ocean of what I could offer. I wanted to reach more people, share what I had learned, and advocate for mental wellness on a larger scale. That’s when I decided to step into the role of a coach and speaker. I started giving talks at local schools, community events, and even at emergency service conferences.
My message was simple but powerful: mental health is just as important as physical health. The focus needs to shift and focus on prevention and resilience building. I shared my story, the struggles I faced, and how I turned those challenges into strength. I encouraged others to open up about their experiences. I sought out to assemble a team with the ability to capitalize on my skills, a team of coaches and leaders who could work together to provide individuals and organizations with the support and solutions they need, and thus MW Coaching was born.
